Hector Perla Jr.

Attorney | Author | Advocate for the Accused and Incarcerated

I am a criminal defense attorney and writer focused on due process, the rule of law, and how state power acts on society’s most vulnerable populations. My work brings together legal practice, scholarship, and public writing in defense of social justice and human rights.

I am dedicated to fighting for the rights of other people who have been falsely accused, but especially for those who are wrongfully convicted.

What I Do

I represent people accused of crimes, fight for their rights, and help them navigate the daily realities of the criminal legal system. I also write about law, justice, power, human rights, and the ways institutions shape our lives.

Before entering the law, I built an academic career studying coercion, resistance, and power in International Relations and between the United States and Latin America.

Today, my work brings those worlds together: courtroom practice, scholarship, and public argument.

Across all of it, I remain focused on a central concern: what justice requires when the stakes are highest.

Why This Work Matters

The law is not only a system of rules. It is also a system of judgment. Both are designed to protect everyone’s rights and reach fair and equitable outcomes for all.

But in courtrooms and public life, outcomes are shaped not only by facts, but by narrative, credibility, discretion, and unequal power. Who is heard, who is believed, and who is punished often turns less on the truth alone, and more on who’s voice is amplified the loudest and perspective is deemed more worthy.

I care about these questions because due process is not a technicality. It is one of the few protections ordinary people have when institutions or powerful actors move too quickly, see too little, or judge too harshly.

My work is grounded in the belief that dignity matters, fairness matters, and that the accused remain innocent until proven guilty under a fair judicial process based on the production of evidence and not simply because they’ve been accused of a crime.

Current Focus

Criminal Defense
I represent people facing prosecution and the full force of the state. My work is rooted in the defense of individual rights, due process, and the principle that accusation is not proof.

Writing
I write about criminal justice, power, rights, and the moral and political consequences of how legal systems judge human beings.

Scholarship and Public Thought
My academic background continues to shape how I understand law within a broader world of systems, institutions, politics, narrative, and power.
